INTERVIEW WITH
SEBASTIEN HUE

February 7, 2015
Picture
Sebastien Hue, aka Shue13, is a French freelance concept artist living in the suburbs of Paris. He’s a self-taught artist who, inspired by the likes of Dylan Cole, decided to learn the ins and outs of digital painting. Fueled by passion, Sebastien channels his love for science fiction and the diversity of visual art straight into his work, seeking to add scale, depth, and drama to his intricately detailed designs.

Sebastien has served as a community volunteer for the DeviantArt science fiction gallery, and is currently Staff Administrator for The Luminarium, an international art group that features talented artists—digital and traditional—from all over the world. He’s done work for Chaos Interactive, L30 Interactive, Orion Publishing, and Blue Shell Games, and is currently engaged with HarperCollins US.

As an artist, what inspires you to create science fiction?
Well, it really has to do with imagining the future from a technological aspect. I'm totally crazy about new technologies. I experienced the extraordinary transformation and evolution of computers during the last three decades. It’s scary to see how fast and far things have come. Imagination can be almost boundless when science fiction is in your corner; that's why I love this genre. I'm also really inspired by sci-fi because of my curiosity about the universe, cosmos, and space. It’s so fantastic to imagine we are not alone in the universe, that other planets exist, and that, one day, we could travel from star to star to discover new worlds, new species, etc... Curiosity feeds my imagination, for sure.

What sci fi books, movies, or artists have made a lasting impression on you?
Apart from Star Wars and Avatar, and from a visual and conceptual aspect, The Matrix blew my mind on screen. It was the first time I went to the cinema twice to see a movie. It was a really crazy concept, and a revolutionary way to film action, with the bullet time moments and huge fighting sequences. I loved everything in the movie.

With regards to specific artists, Dylan Cole was the one who really impressed me when I came into CG art and matte painting. His photo-realistic concepts and matte paintings are so perfect, skilled, brilliant, and totally visionary.

Other than art and science fiction, what are you most passionate about?
Music and the guitar. I have being playing guitar for twenty-three years now. Mostly electric, but everything related to the instrument interests me. I have five guitars, and I'm a Fender lover. I funded my own band seven years ago, called 13-Digits. It's metal music, but all types of music interest me. It hardly works without music.

When it comes to the future, what’s your outlook for humanity—Utopian or Dystopian?
I'm rather leaning towards the Dystopian side. Although, I think Utopian theory could eventually prevail, but probably somewhere other than Earth.

If you could turn one future technology from concept to reality, which would it be?
The Star Trek teleportation or teletransportation stuff for humans, ha ha!! Dematerialize at one place and rematerialize at another—so convenient.

With regards to intelligent life—not fauna in general—which statement do you think is most likely to be true? A.) There is an abundance of intelligent life in the universe; B.) The universe is a big place, but intelligent life is scarce; or C.) Other than mankind and our creations, there is no intelligent life to be found in this universe.
The first one. I don’t think we can be the only living species in the cosmos. We are just a dot in the entire universe, so the galaxy is without a doubt abundant with other intelligent species, probably much much smarter than us.
